Expecting Houdini
A new comedy
By sam havens
It’s Halloween and friends who met in college reunite for food and fun. Winston and Carole host the gathering outdoors at their country home in Connecticut. Lonny, Blake and Orin show up along with Lonny’s brother Blue, and Blake’s new young pal, Gwen. Their former college professor, Ruggles, is also included.
Winston announces that he is expecting the famed magician, Harry Houdini, to return from the other side tonight. Lonny and Blake renew their love/hate relationship and Ruggles flirts with the females. Orin proves that she is quirkier than ever and Blue keeps nodding off due to narcolepsy. Gwen, the new girl, confesses a secret crush and Lonny and Winston fight and fall into a lake.
The Halloween spirit seems to infect the weekend with madness. Secrets are revealed and surprises appear like magic scarves. Quarrels break out, love is confessed, and someone is pregnant! A full moon shines down on these fools and soon it is time for Houdini to appear.
Will Winston and Carole lose their house? Will Houdini show up? Will Ruggles get a woman to run away with him to The Bahamas? And whatever happened to the toaster that Winston made disappear five years ago?
Expecting Houdini is a 96 page comedy in two acts. The single setting is a patio behind Winston and Carole’s home in Connecticut. The time is Halloween of the present year. There are four female and four male characters.
