The Middle Distance
A New Magical Realism Play
The Middle Distance by Sam Havens is a new play about letting go of the past and moving on. Ernie and A.J. hang out in lawn chairs on the campus of their old community college. Neither has figured out what to do with his life, so the guys spend their time dreaming up dubious schemes that range from heading for Alaska to creative ways of committing suicide. A.J. tries to persuade Ernie to commit a robbery. Ernie alludes to a tragic car accident. Peter, a mysterious man with cryptic riddles, shows up on a bicycle and asks Ernie to deliver secret packages for him. An unseen young girl goes by on roller skates. Birds fly overhead. Peter tells a fable about Toby the rabbit. Out of this magical realism, comes an opportunity for transformation. Will Ernie find a way to move on with his life?
